Surfaces are project work mostly considered for the flat plane. I was trying to be a bit poetic in calling them surfaces. But no need to misunderstand. These are projects that just happen to be flat and on a surface.
I initially started many of these from a very graphic design or printmaking point of view. Thinking mostly in editions or prints and utilizing many of the techniques that I've been using in graphic design for the longest time. But they keep evolving. And I am not sure yet where they are going but making them provides immense concentration and takes me often times to that “place” where I go to say hello to that person who never really gets to say hello.
More often than not, they are using some kind of printing process. But I have in recent years moved away from this concept of editions. I think this happened for several reasons. One of the main reasons is that now they are less “planned” and now wholly more improvisational. I make decisions on the fly. The process is now much more intuitive and speed based. My hope is that what I am doing can be similar to the musical process. Something instant and close to the body. And before when thinking in editions or mechanical reproduction, I think there is a distance from the body that makes such processes less fulfilling.
