First of all, thank you so much for this opportunity. It is truly amazing and no matter what, I'm really thankful even to be considered for this!
Street Installation/Mural
Concept: Learning from Las Vegas
Learning from Las Vegas is an old architecture project/text that examines how signage/ornamentation/exteriors can modify/change the meaning of a building. For this project, as the main space is the street, I thought it would be apropos to explore the language of the street. The language of signs and signage.
The first conditions I thought were that this needs to be able to last a long time. As it is part of the streets, it can use some of the highly durable language of the streets. Durable, weather resistant signage. But as opposed to signage that must directly communicate, perhaps this is signage without any direct communication. Signage that communicates sounds or emotion.
So for this project, I have done some research and we can roughly create a series of light boxes that allow for interchangeable artwork within the allotted budget. If we work with this sign company that I work with from the beginning to recreate the entire wall, which they can do, we may be able to get more out of this wall as well at this budget.
Project Structure:
Year 1: Chris does 4 different seasonal themes/sounds/graphics?
Year 2 and on: The signage space becomes an outdoor exhibition space for RYSE for artists to come and create works during the year.
I was imagining, for the first year, I will make seasonal graphics. A series of graphics that creates a different mood for each season. After a year of this, this space can then be used as an exhibition space for RYSE to use moving forward. Different artists can come and display their works here. So it becomes a culture space outside.
Lightbox examples. Most likely, we will use an aluminum frame as this lasts the longest.
Some quick photoshop. These days, I'm quite curious about creating the sense of motion in static spaces. I would love to do a frame sequence that when filmed correctly can also move. This is all old work, but I would love to create something new here!
As we can do full color, very rich printing on these surfaces. We can truly do anything. Very bright vibrant colors. Here are some colored variations. These days I've also been exploring the concept of sounds you do not hear. Sounds you see.
Wall with no artwork. Color variation.
In the event that electricity will prove problematic, as a backup, I was thinking we could do the same concept, street signage, but have it be like a signage wall installation. Similar to say, the crazy signage clusters of Ilsan or Incheon. The new city signage systems where they are all massed and clustered.
So in essence, this would be a structure for different graphics to change over time. Similar to the idea of city signage. Sometimes we could print on fabric, fiberglass, polycarbonate, etc. And we could switch graphics in and out. And similarly, this could eventually become an exhibition space for RYSE to host their own shows/content.
Quick photoshop again. But it could be a series of structures that hold different kinds of signage formats. Hyunsoomahk, screen, fabric, etc.
Some references for structures that can hold different kinds of graphics/signs/banners/etc.
This is a bit adventurous but maybe we could create spaces for people to come and sit in, or hang out amongst the signage? A way signs become a space for the city as well?
Below are selected recent projects. If more specific works are needed, I can create another page when needed.
